Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. Mark 13:8

When we examine the Scriptures in the Olivet discourse (Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21) Jesus speaks about His sudden, personal, visible and bodily return. 1He says we are to look out for those signs in nature that will pave the way to His return. These signs are Famines, Earthquakes, Pestilences, Fearful events and Great signs from heaven. Of these, earthquakes have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in the last century. Earthquake monitoring centers round the globe report that they occur with in-creasing frequency and in diverse locations as predicted by our Lord Jesus Christ during the last days.

An Earthquake releases sudden violent energy from the Earth’s crust to create seismic waves. An earth-quake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale has disastrous effects. Two of the most devastating earthquakes in recent times are the 2004 Boxing Day earthquake that struck Sumatra and the 2015 earth-quake in Nepal. The former, of magnitude 9.3 triggered a regional Tsunami that took millions of lives in several countries. The Nepal earthquake measured 7.9 on the Richter scale and Nepal is still recovering from its effects.

No matter how prepared people are, earthquakes cause destruction and disruption in communities when they occur. We have to agree that with all the modern technology we are unable to reduce the impact of the death toll.

Now these dire portents are not the heralds of the end of the age but are merely “the beginning of birth pains” (Mark 13:8). In other words, when a pregnant woman gets her labor pains it is an alarm for her to know that her baby is about to be brought forth into this world. Though at times she might receive those premature birth pains which come a few weeks early, it is only to prepare her for the actual date of delivery. Similarly, these natural disasters remind us that Christ’s return is very imminent. He is going to come again to bring an end to human history and wipe out all wickedness. And He is sure to bring judgment upon all ungodly and unrighteous. The climatic conditions for His return are far more alarming when compared to our indifference to negate it any further.

Jesus warned us in Matthew 24:44 that “the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect”. The essential element to consider is the warning Jesus gives us that no one knows when He will return and He wants us to be in a state of preparedness. Every Christian has to be watchful for Christ’s imminent return. Watchfulness is mandatory because the devil is roaming around to corrupt, destroy and distort the plan of God in our lives. Satan doesn’t have to worry about the unbelieving as they are already in his fold. He is only concerned about those Christians who are going to spend their eternity with Jesus Christ.

Therefore, be watchful and be prepared for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is coming very, very soon.
